MCDOT to Close Lanes on Rockville Pike Near Medical Center Metro Station During Off-Peak Hours April 5-7 and April 9-12
Montgomery County Dept. of Transportation will close single lanes of NORTHBOUND MD 355 (Rockville Pike) between Jones Bridge Road and South Wood Drive near the Medical Center Metro Station in Bethesda from Wednesday April 5 through Friday April 7, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Please note that the sidewalk on northbound Rockville Pike will be closed April 4-9. Please follow signs and walk safely.
In addition, MCDOT has announced a series of overnight dual lane closures of Rockville Pike between Jones Bridge Road/Woodmont Avenue and Wilson Drive, near the Medical Center Metro Station Two lanes will be closed for four nights next week: Sunday April 9 through Wednesday April 12, from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM.
These lane closures mark the beginning of construction of the Multimodal Crossing Project at the Medical Center Metro Station, which will be under way through approximately late 2020. The Crossing Project will construct a pedestrian tunnel beneath Rockville Pike and deep elevators to the Metrorail mezzanine on the east side of Rockville Pike at Naval Support Activity Bethesda (NSAB), home of the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
The Crossing Project was conceived following the federal BRAC law enacted in 2005 and implemented in 2011, which mandated an increase of personnel at NSAB by nearly 45 percent and doubled the number of annual campus visits to approximately one million. Daily pedestrian crossings of Rockville Pike at Walter Reed/NSAB have increased from 3,000 prior to 2011 to 7,000 after 2011. The Crossing Project will enhance safety for Metrorail passengers, commuter buses, carpools and neighborhood pedestrians by providing safe access to and from the Walter Reed/NSAB campus.
